New statistics from Zapmap have revealed the UK surpassed a 60,000 public chargepoint milestone, with 100,000 public chargepoints expected to become available by 2025.
The milestone has arrived a few months after the 50,000 mark was achieved in October 2023, and so far this year 1,900 devices have been installed every month. This represents a growth rate of 37 per cent in the first four months of 2024 compared to the average across 2023. Of all the chargepoints installed this year, a quarter are rapid chargers. Overall, the UK now has double the number of public chargepoints it had in 2022.
“Hitting 60,000 public charging devices is an extremely significant milestone for electric car drivers across the country,” said Melanie Shufflebotham, chief operating officer at Zapmap. “This is really just the crest of the wave. There’s a real momentum behind the increased rate of charge pont installations up and down the country.”
“It’s fantastic to see that the strong pace of charger installations we saw last year is already being exceeded in 2024,” said Jade Edwards, head of insight at Zapmap.
“With more than 135% growth in the number of the highest-powered chargers over the last year, and 343 high-powered charging hubs across the country at the end of April, the UK is well on the way to hitting 100,000 public charging devices in summer 2025.”
In term of the geographical divide, Greater London has the most EV chargepoints with 19,834, then the South East with 7,309 and Scotland with 5,416.
Of the 1,642 new EV chargepoints installed in April 2024, 991 were slow, 336 fast, and 315 rapid and ultra-rapid chargers.
