It’s Net Zero week 1 – 7 July, marking 7 days of focus on net zero strategy, global climate issues, carbon reduction, government policy, and business and consumer action to achieve net zero. Here’s a round-up of the key things happening for businesses this week.

Net Zero webinars

A number of webinars will be running over the course of Net Zero Week highlighting the UK’s key focus areas for tackling global emissions and achieving climate goals. The British Geological Survey will be chairing a webinar on CO2 and Energy Storage this morning, exploring how the underground can be used to store CO2 and other energy sources for future use.

On Wednesday 5 July a virtual World Café workshop will discuss the challenges identified at COP27 and the practical steps that need to be taken to achieve resolutions. Topics covered will include energy system transformation, engineering, barriers to net zero growth, how to build resilience, and the loss and damage fund established at COP27. On Wednesday lunchtime there will be a Net Zero Stocktake, highlighting the current global net zero commitments, the steps that have been taken to meet them, and the progress we have made towards achieving the Paris Agreement’s climate targets.

You can sign up for a Net Zero Skills and the Role of Universities webinar which will take place Thursday 6 July, honing in on the position of our education facilities when upskilling the workforce for green jobs and net zero growth. The discussion will feature academics from various universities across the UK.

The week will conclude with an Innovate UK webinar focussing on the future economy investor partnership SME competition. The webinar will focus on support for innovation and access to investment for green SMEs as well as the scope and potential of the programme.

What else is happening?

If in-person events are more appealing to you, you can attend the Net Zero Week networking event in Bath as part of Bath Digital Festival on Friday 7 July. This event is ideally suited to creative organisations looking to grow sustainably and explore new, innovative net zero solutions. It’s a great opportunity to meet likeminded business leaders and individuals, and to learn more about the UK’s net zero priorities, incentives and initiatives which support businesses on their low carbon journeys.

What can I do for Net Zero Week?

Net Zero week is an opportunity to broaden your understanding of the UK’s net zero ambitions and understand how your business aligns with them. Businesses who don’t align with the UK’s sustainability goals risk losing their competitive edge in the marketplace, facing punishment from regulatory bodies, or damaging their reputation in a climate-focussed market.

  • Here are three focusses your business can make this Net Zero Week to ensure you are aligning with the UK’s net zero goals:
  • Ensure your environmental policy is clear and up-to-date.
  • Establish a net zero or sustainability team within your business who are in charge of tracking the UK’s net zero journey and monitoring your organisations progress.
Explore your decarbonisation quick wins, such as switching to LED bulbs.
