The Future Leaders Programme (FLP) 2024 is underway, equipping young environmental professionals to drive the net zero transition forward.

The purpose of the programme

Each year, the nine-month immersive course engages young professionals to develop awareness, knowledge and skills essential for a sustainable future.

A shortage of skills is a key barrier to the net zero transition. Equipping today’s environmental professionals with the necessary skills to assume leadership roles in the future, whilst driving decarbonisation within businesses and organisations is essential for ensuring net zero goals are delivered.

The programme which was designed by Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS Certified), and is supported by Green Economy brings together leaders from a range of organisations to share perspectives and work with specialist facilitators and coaches to develop a range of skills and materials to support the ongoing application of what they7 learn on the programme.

Who is the programme for?

The programme is aimed at candidates in the early stages of their career with a few years of experience behind them. The ideal candidate will be looking to assume a leadership role in the next 5 – 10 years.

In order to be considered, applicants will need the support of their employer or sponsor to commit to the programme. There are no specific academic pre-requisites for the programme, and applicants can be graduates, apprentices, or non-graduates working in the public or private sector.

Green Economy Business Consultant Thalia Czarkowska is a graduate of the 2023 FLP. Here’s what she has to say about it:

How is the course structured

Starting in February this year, the course is broken down into three phases.

  • Phase 1: Foundation – equipping delegates with the essential leadership skills they’ll need.
  • Phase 2: Application – delegates undertake a project completed over six months.
  • Phase 3: Aspiration – delegates join a growing network of leaders to progress towards net zero

How to enrol

There are two fully-funded spaces available for the programme as part of a limited number of bursaries offered by MCS. Find out more about what’s involved and how to apply here. Otherwise, we recommend that organisations sponsor their learners and fund their place on the course allowing individuals to develop their leadership skills on this unique programme.
