Green Economy, a new service bringing together the installers, tradespeople and professionals needed to get the UK to net zero into one single network, launched in Manchester on 28 June.

Green Economy will connect suppliers of net zero products and services with buyers through an online Marketplace and Sales Hub designed to increase the competitiveness of the sector.

The service, which is part of the Growth Company, brings together a team that has brokered £6 million of green sales – working with major buyers including EON, Electricity North West and Greater Manchester Combined Authority, as well as a host of SME buyers.

The Marketplace will demonstrate the capability of the green technologies and services sector by providing an online directory of suppliers and their products and services. The Sales Hub will promote sales and market opportunities, whilst providing tailored support which will aid suppliers and buyers through the procurement process.

Single destination for installers and providers

In Greater Manchester alone there are over 3,000 businesses in the low carbon and environmental goods and services sector, employing nearly 59,000 people.

Speaking at the launch event – which was marked by a new paper, Growing the Green Economy – an untapped opportunity – Green Economy director Amy House said: “We have worked hand in glove with these businesses over the past decade and we know that they need greater access to market opportunities.

“With the launch of Green Economy we hope to mitigate this challenge by providing a single destination for green installers and providers to promote their business, that will in turn give buyers confidence and accessibility to this thriving sector.

Tipping point

“Delivering net zero requires significant change to how business and consumers behave, but we’ve reached a tipping point whereby if we don’t act now, it simply won’t be possible to achieve the ambitions set out by global leaders. I am hugely excited to be launching one of the solutions to this challenge, whilst simultaneously raising the prospects for innovative local suppliers.”

Mark Hughes, chief executive of the Growth Company, added: “By investing in Green Economy we’re providing a real and tangible solution to the transition to net zero for businesses across our region who have the aims but not the means to achieve the shift. We already have a strong track record in delivering this support in Greater Manchester, and with Green Economy we’re now in a position to expand our offer to other regions and support the move to net zero.”
