A Greater Manchester online retailer specialising in refurbished tech has achieved energy savings of 67,137kWh following an LED lighting changeover.

musicMagpie operate a warehouse in Hazel Grove where they refurbish and sell old tech including mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and more. After undergoing an LED project on their Macclesfield site, supported by Pilot Group, the musicMagpie team identified an opportunity to reduce energy use and cut carbon by changing the light fittings in their Hazel Grove warehouse for LEDs.

Unsure which supplier to choose, Phill Marples, Head of Sustainability at musicMagpie, approached Green Economy Consultant Priya Sirpal to help identify the right supplier to meet their needs. After assessing the scale of the project, Priya included the bid in our weekly member newsletter which is sent out to all our suppliers and installers of green technologies and services.

Of the firms that replied to the bid, Assured Energy Solutions expressed the knowledge and interest Phill was looking for.

“After Priya helped us advertise the bid, James and the team at Assured Energy Solutions seemed the best fit,” explains Phill Marples. “They understood the scale and purpose of the project well, and homed in on better quality fittings, lower emissions, and lower costs.”

Phill singled out key areas that could benefit from LED installations, including the mezzanine, picking aisles, and other areas with consistent footfall throughout the day, but no need to be constantly lit up. In these sections, their old bulbs were replaced with LEDs, and switches replaced with PRIs and sensors.

Small-managed office spaces and the company canteen have also switched to LED lighting fixtures in the last month.

Overall, the project involved over 1,000 LED fittings, with a year to date energy saving of 67,137kWh and carbon savings of 36.25 tonnes CO2e.

“Looking at our energy bill, the bill we received for April 2024, since the LEDs have been fitted, is the lowest we’ve ever seen,” said Phill.

In terms of Phill’s advice for identifying the right supplier for green technology projects:

“Don’t base your decision on cost alone. The quality of the fittings affects their longevity, so sometimes the cheapest aren’t the best. Green Economy can help with vetting any potential suppliers out there or make direct introductions if you’re unsure where to start. Finally, carbon consultancy can be a very useful approach to help your business understand where it can save on energy and emissions.”
